About
This piece reflects Manet’s personal fascination with Spanish culture, as well as its popularity in Paris at the time. It’s lively feeling contributed to its popular and critical success at the Paris Salon in 1861. This was Manet’s debut at the Salon and started him off strong, though not all of his work would garner such positive feedback there. While this piece was praised for its realism, it is clearly posed with a model; the costume is composed of several accessories from Manet’s personal collection which reappear in other pieces, and the model is unfamiliar with the guitar, given the way he holds his hands on the strings, and the guitar itself which is strung for a right handed played but held in the model’s left.
