About
Emperor Napoleon III ordered the renovation of Paris under the direction of Baron Haussmann, and early in the 1860s the poor area where Manet's studio was located was being torn down to allow for the new construction of the wide, tree lined streets that Paris is known for today. In this painting Manet sought to capture an unbiased scene of the urchins, poor, and unfortunate who would be displaced in this construction. Manet likely would have observed these people firsthand outside of his studio. The piece has an ambiguity to it that is characteristic for Manet who often painted from the perspective of an unbiased observer.
