About
Manet occasionally painted current events, this was the first of such paintings. While he did not personally witness it, this dramatic naval battle scene is based off the American Civil War battle between the warship Kearsarge and Confederate raider Alabama in which the Kearsarge sunk the Alabama off the French Coast. Manet would also paint a piece of the victorious ship anchor near Boulogne.
