About
Painted at the restaurant Pere Lathuille, this portrait features Judith French as the woman on the right and Gauthier-Lathuille as the man on the left. Originally the model for the woman was Ellen Andree, a charming young actress, but she had to miss a sitting to rehearse for a play and so Manet coolly replaced her with French. The two lean in close to one another, deeply embroiled in their conversation. They seem to gaze in to one another’s eyes while in the distance on the right a waiter looks over to them. The warmth of the palette Manet used speaks to the warmth of the couple’s affection for one another.
