About
This painting captures one tiny portion of the expansive gardens at Versailles on a warm summer day. The flowers and bushes have all burst into bloom, dotting the canvas in color and making for a lush scene. The bench, which is a seemingly inconsequential detail to the painting, must have taken an important role in Manet’s mind, given that he titled the painting after it.
