About
Manet provided a number of illustrations for the 1875 edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, which was translated in to French by Stephane Mallarme. This illustration depicts the man, seated at his table, reading in an attempt distract his heart from the loss of his love Lenore. Manet used a lot of black and heavily shaded the entire composition, aside from the lamp and paper around the man, showing the moodiness of the poem.
