About
Manet painted two versions of this work after December of 1880, this is the smaller of the two. The pieces were inspired by Rochefort, an journalist who was outspoken against the imperial regime and started a newspaper called La Lanterne in 1868. The news paper was banned and in 1873 Rochefort was imprisoned for his involvement in the Paris Commune. He escaped by sea with three accomplices: Pain, Grousset, and Jourde. Manet painted the dramatic scene after the 1880 decision to grand communards amnesty, allowing them back into France.
