About
Manet’s only painting of the beach at Boulogne-sur-Mer on the northern coast of France, this is the composite of eighteen different sketches. Many micro-scenes take place across the simple background, each with little regard to scale or perspective. There are many groups of well dressed tourists, a horse and carriage, sailboats, and so on, adding to a vibrant and lively beach.
