About
Manet painted this is the summer of 1873 while on the three week vacation with his family to the coastal town of Berck-sur-Mer. His wife Suzanne and brother Eugene posed for him, each absorbed in their own little world. There is a sense of peace and melancholy to the piece; the figures do not interact and are heavily clothes against the sun’s warmth, unaffected by the goings-on around them. The background of the piece is fairly undetailed, much more the impression of a seaside than actually representative of a seaside. While he never officially showed with the impressionists, Manet influenced them, and was in turn influenced by them in a beautiful push and pull. His color palette was dissimilar to theirs for its inclusion of black and other dark colors, but the technique he uses to create his composition had many connections.
