About
One of Manet’s most politically charged pieces, L’Execution de Maximilien was made in response to a series of events beginning in 1864. French troops had invaded Mexico, and installed Austrian archduke Ferdinand Maximilian as something of an emperor. An insurrection erupted and the French abandoned Maximilian, who was captured and executed on June 19, 1867, along with two Mexican generals. Napoleon III’s attempts at imperialism were held in contention by many French citizens, including edouard Manet, a staunch supporter of the Republic over the monarchy. Manet created four paintings and this lithograph recounting the events that took place in Mexico. This lithograph draws on imagery from Francisco Goya; highly provocative, so much so that French authorities did not allow the piece to be printed until the year of Manet’s death, 1884.
