Manet painted this on a trip to Venice in fall 1875. He traveled with his wife Suzanne Leenhoff and the painter James Tissot, however he struggled to adjust to the city. The canal waters are painted with somewhat stippled stroked of the brush, overlapping like fish scales in shades of blue and yellow. The candy striped blue and white poles draw the viewer's eye up and down the painting, at odds with the stokes making up the water which draw the viewer's eye horizontally. This contrast could speak to Manet's own discomfort in Venice.
