About
This painting, like most of Manet’s still life works, recalls Dutch masters of the 17th century. However, Manet brings a bold frankness to the way he executes these pieces. His brushstrokes are highly visible and are unapologetic about it, instead making them a feature of his style. He never exhibited his still life works at the Paris Salon, instead giving them to friends and selling them through smaller Parisian art galleries. This piece in particular depicts various pieces of seafood. It has a freshness to it, as if each creature was freshly caught and brought to Manet straight from the water.
