About
Manet renders the fulness of the pears using a single, strong light source coming from the upper right to illuminate the ripe fruit. The shadows curve around the back sides of the pears, creating a sense of realism. Despite the stylized nature of the painting, the viewers feels almost as if they could reach in through the paintings to grab hold of one of the fruits and take a bite.
