About
Manet was fond of the concerts put on in cafes and gardens, often attending them with the wealth artists and intellectuals of Paris. He grew up in a well-to-do family and enjoyed urban luxuries which he often painted. Here he captures a singer in a voluminous, pale blue dress as she stands on stage. The light seems to stream down through the foliage in the background, stippling the composition with sun.
