About
The brilliance of Manet’s technique is seen in his floral still life painting. His handling of the paint is spontaneous, each petal of the peony is little more than a suggestion, just detailed enough so that the viewer knows what they’re seeing, but not hampered down by the minutiae of the thing. The work has a dreamy quality to it thanks to this technique, a slight haziness which is enchanting. The descriptive power of each of his brushstrokes is truly inspiring; he does so much with so little.
