It is said that after painting his iconic portrait of Berthe Morisot with a bouquet of violets in 1872 Manet gave Morisot this small bunch of the delicate blooms painted here. He was a prolific still life painter, often painting idyllic still life paintings of various types of flora, most often bouquets of flowers. His control of detail to communicate exactly what is necessary, but no more than that, leaving some of the finer points to the imagination is exactly what makes his still life works so pleasant to look at.
