About
Berthe Morisot, noted Impressionist painter, and Edouard Manet were very close friends through the years, and she would eventually join his family as a sister-in-law through her marriage to one of his brothers. This portrait of Morisot is possibly the most stunning of the numerous paintings he did of her. The strong light source from the left side of her face seems to glow, beautifully contrasting the shadows on the rest of her face. The black clothing and hat are said to enhance her “Spanish beauty,” a culture Manet deeply admired, though Morisot was not Spanish. This piece was considered by many of Manet’s peers to be his greatest work, thanks to his masterful handling black which creates depth and detail in piece when many artists of the era were using lighter and lighter palettes.
