Manet provided a number of illustrations for the 1875 edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, which was translated in to French by Stephane Mallarme. This illustration depicts the man, who has opened his window after hearing a tapping sound and hoping it was his lost love Lenore. Manet used a lot of black and heavily shaded the right side of the composition showing the moodiness of the poem. The titular raven which is fully black aside from its beak, making it stand out boldly from the lightness of the window and cityscape behind it.
