About
From 1878 – 1879 Manet painted a number of mildly divisive scenes set Cabaret de Reichshoffen on the Boulevard Rochechouart. Here working and outcast women and well-to-do men could meet one another to freely mingle. This piece shows a tightly packed crowd at a cafe. A spiffy man takes up most of the composition on the right, around him several women go about their business. When it was exhibited in 1880 it was met with both praise and criticism for its frank realism and its lack of decorum respectively.
