About
Manet had a love of Spanish culture, painting many pieces inspired by this fascination, however he only visited Spain once during his lifetime in 1865. His love of Spanish culture centered around 17th century Spanish art, particularly Diego Velasquez, and he let it influence his style of portraiture. Manet saw this matador in action while in Spain and created this piece upon returning to France. It was the first full-length portrait he made after studying the works of Velazquez in Madrid and based it off Diego Velazquez’s Pablo de Valladolid which he saw at the Prado Museum.
