About
This white marble sculpture depicts the couple Hiawatha (the man on the left) and Minnehaha (the woman on the right) holding hands and gazing lovingly at each other. They are garbed in Native American attire, as seen by Hiawatha’s feathered headdress, their fur-lined clothes, and the moccasins on the couples’ feet. Lewis also highlights the muscular strength in Hiawatha’s arms and grip. Because she had to market her works towards a white audience, Lewis combined in her artwork her Native American heritage with Neoclassical style that her consumers recognized.
