About
Based on the epic poem The Song of Hiawatha, Lewis's bust features the titular male character carved in white marble. Lewis's artwork carefully highlights the Native American features of Hiawatha, such as his hairstyle and his dress. Figures such as these allowed for Lewis to showcase her Native heritage in combination with the Neoclassical style her audience recognized.
