About
At the last of the Impressionist Exhibitions, held in 1886, Degas showed a series of female nudes in which the women are dressing, batheing, washing, drying, or otherwise grooming themselves in moment of quiet solitude. These pieces are distinct from his most iconic paintings of dancers, but no less significant to his place as one of the greatest figural painters of his day, possible of all time. His figures are not idealized or glamourous, but rather realistic and unsentimental. It is this frank portrayal of his models which make the pieces feel so intimate.
