About
Around the 1880s Degas’s primary medium became pastels and with them his color palette became more vibrant than ever. The medium gave his work a smooth, soft appearance, each stroke of the pastel leaving a gentle train of color. Degas employs that softness here, creating a dreamy scene of dancers by adding layers upon layers of pastel to add depth and interest to the composition.
