About
Degas’s love of ballet was strong, leading him to create over 1,500 works devoted to the art form over a period of 40 years. His artistic process often mirrored that of the dancers he so loved; repetition and endless time spent perfecting the same forms. This dedication to subject matter let to a masterful understanding of the way the human moves. This sketch captures three dancers, each posed differently, the frontmost one is positioned awkwardly, reflecting Degas’s fascination with unconventional poses and the way people positioned themselves when moving freely, without regard to the thought of others.
