Degas, dedicating to presenting modern life, was enamoured in his later years with painting horse races. The activity drew crowds from many different social standings and social classes, contributing to its popularity in France around this time. Degas’s interest in this piece is moreso on the light, shadow, and color than the upcoming start of the race. The piece is full of strong diagonals are created by the shadows in the horses and the stands, each diagonal drawing the viewer’s eye into the center of the composition where the final thorobred will fall into line.
