About
Degas drew and painted some 15 piece on the subject of millinery in the 1880s, the most ambitious of which was this piece, The Millinery Shop. The angle of this piece is somewhat awkward, as if the viewer might be peering in through a window of the shop, and the identity of the girl is unknown, she could have been a customer or employee of the shop. A previous version of this composition showed the girl is a fancy dress, indicating she was likely a customer, though she did not have a hat, an essential accessory of the bourgeoisie. In this iteration though, the girl wears a more casual dress, and a glove, perhaps to protect the delicate fabric of the hats she handles as an employee.
