About
Valernes was a French artist who studied under Eugene Delacroix for two years. While he never found widespread success like his instructor, he did exhibit at the Paris Salon on three separate occasions and would go on to become a professor of drawing. He became acquainted with Degas in the 1860s and the two remained loyal friends. This is one of two pieces Degas painted of Valernes, the other was a solo portrait of the man.
