About
Early in his time as a painter, Degas painted around 40 self portraits, after quitting the ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and going for an extended stay in Italy. His style is creating these self portraits, which capture his visage from around 1855 – 1856, reflect his knowledge of portraiture by Ingres, Rembrandt, and Delacroix. The dark, moody atmosphere was likely influenced by their use of chiaroscuro. Degas portrays himself as a stoic man, in an indistinct space, though the edge of what could be a canvas or easel can be seen on the left hand side.
