About
This piece is a study for the expression of Gaujelin in another, larger portrait made in the same year. Gaujelin was a dancer for the Paris Opera, which Degas frequented, both as a member of the audience and as an observer backstage. The dancer’s face is highly detailed, showing her subtle expression and clear complexion. The arch of her brows and uneven lips likely are likely directly copied from her countenance in real life; the details are so specific.
