About
Mary Cassatt (1844 – 1926) and Degas became close friends after he admired her portrait Ida which was shown at the 1874 Paris Salon and invited her to exhibit with the Impressionists. The two came from similar backgrounds, though he was French and she was American, and enjoyed similar things. They could often be spotted studying art at the Louvre along with Mary’s sister Lydia who also had an interest in art. Cassat would pose for Degas many times, and it was thanks to her advice and advocacy that he found acclaim in the United States. Their friendship waivered later in their lives, however their positive impact on each other’s careers is doubtless.
