About
Horse races were a recurring theme in Degas’s work, particularly during the 1860s. The first racetrack in France, the Hippodrome, was established at Fontainebleau, southeast of Paris, in 1778 and it quickly became a popular destination for high society Parisians. Degas was born to a well off family and would have been familiar with the track. He enjoyed portraying modern interests such as music and dance, making horse racing another natural subject for him. Degas had an interest in the anatomy of horses, using his knowledge to enhance his work, painting, drawing, and sculpting horses.
