Three high society men lounge about, looking bored. Degas himself came from a relatively wealthy family, making him familiar with the lifestyle of such gentlemen, whom he would count among his friends. Jeantaud was one of Degas's comrades at arms during the Franco-Prussian War, and the two remained acquainted after the war ended. Throughout his career Degas would paint many piece depicting high society, but his focus was often on the behind-the-scenes moments of life, the quiet, intimate moments that are often not talked about or addressed – such as young men with their guards down, each in their own little worlds.
