About
Henri Rouart was an engineer and amature painter, as well as a personal friend to Degas. He owned works from many contemporary French artists, including Degas, as well as other exotic trappings, seen here behind his daughter, Helene. She was 23 at the time this piece was painted and had married, though Degas did not paint her wedding ring. This was not the first portrait that Degas had painted of Helene, he had painted her when she was 9 years old, seated upon her father’s knee.
