About
The title of this piece, Dancers In Green Skirts, is almost misleading; the skirts are much more than green, they burst with other hues. Peach makes up the bottom of the skirt, while teal sweeps up the side. The highlight near the waist is pale yellow, and only when the very backside of the skirt is viewed can marks of green be seen. The voluminous layers of each tutu are made up of countless strokes of oil, creating a sense of depth to the seemingly weightless material. Perhaps it is the glow of the stage lights which cast a rainbow of colors onto the girl’s dresses as opposed to the promised green, but one this is for certain, Degas captures the glamour of the costume beautifully.
