About
Degas’s creating were a sort of exploration of modern society, captured from unusual angles and in unconventional poses. The cropping of his compositions suggest the influence of Japanese prints which were becoming increasingly popular in France during the 1860s. His work is a product of the time he lived in, exploring both the upper crust and social rejects that made up society through contemporary modern art practices. Degas’s ballerinas were a personal favourite subject, dancers who performed almost exclusively for the rich, but lead grueling and unglamorous lives behind the scenes.
