About
Degas, best known for his paintings and drawing of ballet dancers, created over 1,500 works featuring dancers over a period of 40 years. His affections focused on the behind-the-scenes of life at the opera, the rehearsals, trainings, moments of rest, and preparations for performances, and so on. The minutiae of the art form intrigued him. Through his endless sketches of dancers he gained a mastery of their anatomy and musculature, as well as of his medium of choice, pastels and oils.
