About
Degas was known for his genre scenes of women, either at work (dancers and laundresses) or at home in private moments (going to bed or grooming). He sought realism in these pieces, capturing the unidealised truths of the moments. He often used the motif of a yawning woman as a way of removing the glamour and mystique from the scenes to highlight the real experiences of workers which was one of hard labor and little rest.
