About
Ludovic-Napoleon Lepic (1839 – 1889), a French artist, archaeologist, and art patron, is painted here sitting with his two young sons. This was one of about eleven paintings or pastel drawings that Degas made of Lepic over the course of their friendship. While Lepic was himself an artist, one of the original Impressionists no less, he is most recognized for being a marine painter. He favoured traditional arts more so that creating the avant garde and when the Impressionists pressures him to not show at the Paris Salon while simultaneously showing with them, he distanced himself from the group.
