It was a common practice for artist’s to copy the work of old masters as part of their training, and continues to be to today. Degas copied this piece by Andrea Mantegna around 1861, one of many paintings from the Renaissance that he recreated. From his childhood he frequently visited the Louvre with his father and developed a love for Italian painters, Mantegna was one of his favorites.
