About
Around the 1880s Degas’s primary medium became pastels and with them his color palette became more vibrant than ever. While his peers, as well as those who came before and after him, mainly use oil paints, Degas alone adopted pastels for the majority of his work, giving it a smooth, soft appearance, each stroke of the pastel leaving a gentle train of color, as opposed to the harsh lines of other mediums. This made adhering to the loose freedom of the Impressionist style completely natural. Degas experimented with combining the pastels, which he called a happy medium between drawing and painting, with gouache, watercolour, oils, turpentine, and even monotypes. The unique medium opened a world of possibilities for the artists.
