About
Degas, dedicating to presenting modern life, was enamoured in his later years with painting horse races. The activity drew crowds from many different social standings and social classes, contributing to its popularity in France around this time. Degas would often create several different versions of a composition, each with subtle variations, meaning he created multiple pieces which looked similar to this one. The continuity between his works creates a fun sort of spot the difference game between his works while one theorizes about why the particular variations of this piece were significant to the artist, and what he might have gone on to change in the next one.
