About
After 1880 Degas began using pastels, and in the 1880s used them to create a series of nudes. The pieces were not highly sexualized for the viewers gaze, or elegantly posed like most historical nudes, but instead feature women in realistic, if somewhat awkward, poses, seeming to be quite oblivious to anyone watching. It is these ungainly poses which make the pieces feel intimate and true to life. Degas wanted the viewer to feel as if they had, “looked through a keyhole,” looking at the woman, undisturbed, existing entirely for herself. Degas continued this trend, drawing nude women like this for the remainder of his career, making it a staple of his legacy.
