About
After 1880 Degas started to use pastels as his primary medium, and around in the mid 1880s they were his tool of choice for creating a series of nudes. These pieces were different from the classical nudes of Greece and Rome, which typically depicted goddesses and mythological figures. Degas’s nudes showed intimate moments of unidealized women, engaged in everyday activities like washing and combing their hair. He wrote of his work, “hitherto the nude has always been represented in poses which presuppose an audience, but these women of mine are honest and simple folk… It is as if you looked through a keyhole.”
