About

Perhaps one of Dorothea Lange’s most famous works, this photograph was captured in 1936 during the period in which Lange was commissioned by the US government to photograph struggling farmers and their families. The Farm Security Administration (FSA) used these photographs to inspire other Americans who were detached from the difficult reality of the crop failures that were hurting the country economically during the Great Depression. This specific photo, which now stands to symbolize the hardships faced by farmers across the country during this period, captures a mother with a furrowed brow and looking off into the distance beyond the camera lens. She holds her two small children at her side, and they shy away.
