About
Although Purdy covers much of the paper in vivid colored pencil, including a bright blue sky, the text that shows through is taken from an antique ledger or accounting book. The tradition of using paper like this comes from 19th century Plains Indians who often repurposed these pages in their drawings. In this portrait scene a faceless woman stands among blue flowers and birch trees, in an elaborate outfit with her long hair done in bows. The exaggerated perspective makes the woman seem taller than the trees, conveying an air of importance.
