About

In this colored pencil work, Purdy draws three women driving in what the title suggests is a Cadillac convertible, while also playing off the name of the Caddo Nation. Each woman’s outfit has a patterned train that blows up in the wind, and as they drive over a ground of greenery they leave a trail of purple and red flowers. This work is an example of ledger art, in which the art is created on a page from a ledger or accounting book. This tradition references 19th century Plains Indian drawings which were often created on pages like these, repurposed from the white colonizers’ record books and used for their artistic practices.
