Mandrágora is an oil painting depicted a seated woman wearing a wedding dress and an engagement ring. She smiles and gazes directly at the viewer, inviting them to focus on her and her surroundings. On her lap, she holds a human skull, and a cobweb and a glowing root flank her left and right side respectively. She stands out from the background as she is wearing white against a black background. The theme of death and life in the painting renders the painting to have an eerie feel. However, the balance of life and death provides a glimpse into Rivera’s inner thoughts about the subject.
