About
Agrarian Leader Zapata was one of Diego Rivera’s murals celebrating the leaders, peasants, and revolutionaries of the Mexican revolutionaries. It depicts Emiliano Zapata, a revolutionary leader who was killed in 1919. Rivera painted him standing next to a white horse and wearing the local clothing of the Cuernavaca region and carrying a machete. A crowd of people follows behind him as the march. Through this painting, Rivera sought to portray him as a hero of the revolution through an image of vengeance and leadership.
