About
El Albañil (The Bricklayer) is thought to be the earliest Diego Rivera painting in the United States. It was painted when Rivera was 18 for a student competition. This painting depicted a Mexican man standing and holding a shovel with a bucket next to him. He seems to be resting after laying bricks and gazes directly at the viewer which draws the viewer’s focus to his serious face and pose. Rivera often painted artwork that was heroic portrayals of revolutionaries, workers, and peasants. Through this painting, he celebrated the jobs of ordinary men and the hard work that they do.
